WORTHINGTON, Iowa - Sylvester A. Fortman, 78, of Worthington, died Saturday, July 31, 2004, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul's Catholic Church, Worthington, with the Rev. Douglas Loecke officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Kramer Funeral Home, Dyersville, where there will be a parish scripture service at 5 p.m., the Worthington Fire Department will gather at 6 p.m., and the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars services will be at 7 p.m.

He was born on Dec. 29, 1925, in Worthington, son of Ralph and Anna (Gaul) Fortmann.

He served his country during the Korean War and received the Purple Heart.

He married Marcella C. Elenz on July 9, 1953, at St. Francis Catholic Church, Dyersville. They farmed in the Worthington area until his retirement, when he began to enjoy wood-crafting for family and friends.

He was a member of the American Legion Post 137, VFW Post 7736, the Disabled Veterans Chapter 6 and the Catholic Order of Foresters Court 607.

Surviving are his wife, Marcella, of Worthington; his children, Janice (Lenny) Racine, of Spring Valley, Ill., Dave Fortman, of Worthington, and Joyce (Delwyn) Curtis and Judy (Gerald) Nachtman, both of Manchester; and 10 grandchildren, Lenny, Kristin and Jason Racine, William, Rachel and Melissa Curtis and Robert, Laura, Mindy and Sarah Nachtman.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brothers, Gilbert, Emil and Merlin.
