MONTICELLO, Iowa -- Richard U. "Dick" Besler, 57, of 22614 Highway 38, Monticello, formerly of Dyersville, died Sunday, Aug. 3, 2008, at home.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 7, at St. Francis Xavier Basilica, Dyersville, with the Rev. Donald Hertges officiating. Burial will be in St. Paul's Cemetery, Worthington. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Reiff Funeral Home, Dyersville, where there will be a wake service at 4 p.m.

He was born on Oct. 5, 1950, in Dubuque, son of Urban J. and Margene C. (Reiff) Besler.

He received his education in the St. Paul's School, Worthington, and is a 1969 graduate of Western Dubuque High School. He also is a graduate of Kirkwood Community College, Cedar Rapids.

He was employed with Georgia Pacific, Monticello.

Dick enjoyed traveling and spending time with his family and nieces and nephews. He also enjoyed Western movies and was a collector of cowboy artifacts.

Surviving are two brothers, Daniel Besler, of Milpitas, Calif., and Urban Besler Jr., of Springville; three sisters, Barbara (Tom) Deutmeyer, of Dyersville, Linda (Tim) Billmeyer, of Marion, and Carol (friend, Brad Snell) Besler, of Iowa City; and several nieces and nephews, Margene (fiance, Josh Shullaw) Deutmeyer, Lindsay and April Deutmeyer, Nick Besler, Alyssa and Thomas Billmeyer, Taylor Gray, Karen Maurer, Becky Koth and Danny, Alex and Robert Besler.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Thomas Besler, on Sept. 17, 1984, and William Besler, on July 12, 1979; a sister, Mary Ann Besler, in infancy; and a nephew, Tom Besler Jr., on Oct. 5, 2006.
