WORTHINGTON, Iowa - Clarence John "Doc" Soppe, 86, of Worthington, died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, at Shady Rest Care Center, Cascade.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul Catholic Church, Worthington, with burial in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. today at Kramer Funeral Home, Dyersville, where there will be a parish scripture service at 4 p.m.

He was born on March 23, 1914, in Worthington, son of Henry and Magdalena (Feltes) Soppe. He married Lucille M. Jarding on Oct. 6, 1942, in Farley. They farmed in the Worthington area all of their lives. Mrs. Soppe died in 1993.

Clarence enjoyed playing cards, checkers, fishing, reading and cracking walnuts. He was a former president of the Worthington Sportsman Club and was instrumental in the development and preservation of the Worthington Ball Park.

Doc was the outstanding catcher for the Worthington Sluggers for most of his 20 years as a player. In 1996, he was inducted into the Dubuque County Baseball Hall of Fame.

Surviving are three sons, Richard (Seok), of San Diego, Thomas (Cathy), of Anamosa, and Harold "Hooker" (Jan), of Bedford, Texas; two daughters, Mary (Bob) Olson, of Golden, Colo., and Gertrude "Cooie" (Don) Besler, of Key West; 17 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mary Boyle, of Worthington.

He also was preceded in death by a sister, Gertrude Boyle; and four brothers, Gerhardt, Alphonse, Earnest and Alfred Soppe.
