WORTHINGTON, Iowa - Louis F. Smith, 86, of Worthington, died after a long illness Monday evening, Oct. 23, 1995, at The Finley Hospital, Dubuque.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul's Catholic Church, Worthington, with burial in the church cemetery. Friends may call after 2 p.m. Wednesday at Kramer Funeral Home, Dyersville, where there will be a parish scripture service at 4 p.m.

Mr. Smith was a farmer and worked for Delaware County, Hogan Chevrolet, Dubuque County Sheriff's Department, Kennedy Mall, B.L. Anderson Construction and Head Start.

He was born on Feb. 22, 1909, in Ipswich, S.D., son of Hilar N. and Emmerence (Engler) Smith. He married Florence Murray on Sept. 12, 1932, in Sand Springs; she died on Nov. 1, 1969.

He was a 38-year veteran of the Worthington Volunteer Fire Department and was a member of the Worthington Sportsmen's Club and St. Paul's Parish in Worthington.

Surviving are a son, Lloyd (Mary Ann) Smith, of Durango; three daughters, Marilyn (Robert) Rubner, of Arlington, Kathleen Hahn, of Dubuque, and Lois Loecke, of Manchester; 27 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren; four brothers, Emmet Smith, of Onslow, Cletus and Alfred Smith, both of Cascade, and Howard Smith, of Bayfield, Wis.; and four sisters, Germaine McElmeel, of Monticello, Jeanette (Louis) Fangman, of Cascade, Eileen (Wendell) Watson, of Janesville, and Carlyn (Virgil) Hunt, of Edgewood.

He also was preceded in death by four grandchildren; his parents; one brother; and two sisters.
