WORTHINGTON, Iowa - Cletus J. Smith, 87, formerly of Worthington, died at 6:35 a.m. Wednesday, May 5, 1999, at Shady Rest Care Center, Cascade.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Paul's Catholic Church, Worthington, with burial in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 9 p.m. today at Reiff Funeral Home, Cascade, where there will be a scripture wake service at 6 p.m., and a St. Paul's Parish rosary at 4 p.m.

Mr. Smith farmed in the rural Worthington and Cascade areas, retiring in 1970.

He was born on Aug. 27, 1911, in Worthington, son of Hillarius "Hilar" and Mary Emerence (Engler) Smith.

He received his education in the Worthington-area schools. He was a member of St. Paul's Parish, Worthington.

Surviving are two brothers, Alfred (Rose) Smith, of Cascade, and Howard (Leona) Smith, of Bayfield, Wis.; four sisters, Eileen (Wendell) Watson, of Jamesville, Germaine McElmeel, of Monticello, Jeanette (Louis) Fangmann, of Cascade, and Carlyn (Virgil) Hunt, of Edgewood; two sisters-in-law, Betty Smith, of Onslow, and Lavina Smith, of Monticello; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, George Smith, Louis Smith and Emmett Smith; two infant sisters, Ruth and Margie; a sister-in-law, Florence Smith; and a brother-in-law, Joe McElmeel.

A Cletus J. Smith Memorial Fund has been established.
