Harry F. "Bud" Eldridge Jr., 91, of Bethany Home, died Friday, Feb. 10, 2012, at Bethany Home.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 14, at Resurrection Catholic Church, with the Rev. Gary Mayer officiating. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by the American Legion Post 6 of Dubuque. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Siegert-Casper Colonial Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 390 N. Grandview Ave., where a parish scripture wake service will be recited at 7:30 p.m.

Bud was born on April 15, 1920, in Dubuque, son of Harry F. and Bernadette (Cashman) Eldridge Sr. He was a graduate of Dubuque Senior High School, class of 1938. Bud captained the football team coached by Wilbur Dalzell that won the 1937 Mississippi Valley Conference title. He also played American League baseball during his high school years.

He married Kathleen Badger on May 26, 1941, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church; she preceded him in death on Dec. 18, 1976, after 35 years of marriage.

Bud worked for the railroad for a year before entering the military. He served in the Army, in World War II, stationed in the Philippines the last two years of the war.

After the war, Bud partnered with his father in owning and operating the Eldridge DX Sunray service station on University and Nevada streets for many years, leaving in 1969. He then drove a school bus in his semi-retirement for another 10 years.

Bud later married Rose (Bieger) Walker on Oct. 28, 1978, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church.

He was a member of Resurrection Parish, past member of the American Legion Post 6 of Dubuque and a former coach for the St. Anthony's Holy Name baseball team.

Surviving are his wife of 33 years, Rose (Walker) Eldridge, of Dubuque; two sons, Peter (Marge) Eldridge, of Dubuque, and Philip (Jackie) Eldridge, of Iowa City; a stepdaughter, Judy (Robert) Freiburger, of Dubuque; three stepsons, Jim Walker, of Dayton, Ohio, Joel Walker, of Marion, Iowa, and Jeff (Jane) Walker, of Dubuque; a stepdaughter-in-law, Maria Walker, of Pembroke Pines, Fla.; two sisters-in-law, Sally Badger, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Sue McCormick, of White Bear, Minn.;

19 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

He also was preceded in death by his parents; and a stepson John Walker.
