Joseph R. “Joe” Thoma, 56 of Key West, IA died Thursday January 30, 2014 at Mercy Medical Center the result of a vehicle accident.

Funeral mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday February 4, 2014 at St. Joseph Church, Key West with Rev. Michael Podhajsky officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Friends may call from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday February 3rd at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Rd where there will be a wake service at 3:00 p.m.

Joe was born on March 19, 1957 in Dubuque, Iowa the son of William J. and Edna (Barth) Thoma. He graduated from Wahlert High School in 1975. He married Patricia Kuehn on January 19, 1980 they were married for 16 years and together they continued to raise their three children.

He worked the family farm in the Key West area all of his life. He enjoyed playing euchre, raising animals, and was an expert at getting people "worked up". He lived for hunting and spending time outdoors with his two sons Willie and Hunter. Joe was happiest being in the woods listening for his dogs to tree. He has given his kids the tools of life that they will carry in their hearts forever.

Joe touched the lives of everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him. He was considered a father to many and had countless friends.

He is survived by his four children, Michelle (Carl) Carner, Emily (Tim Gosche) Thoma, Will (Tara LaMaack) Thoma and their mom Patti Thoma, Hunter Thoma and his mom Jacki Schilling. Two grandchildren Joseph and Charlotte and a third coming in June. His siblings; Gary (Diane) Thoma, Linda (Terry) Steuer, and Diane (Tim) Gile, his godchildren Mike Thoma, and Matt Steuer, along with many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, brothers and sisters-in-law.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his father and mother-in-law Ron and Cookie (Keller) Kuehn.

In lieu of flowers a Joe Thoma memorial fund has been established.
