Abbie Aseneth Hamilton, daughter of James and Mary Hamilton, was born September 7, 1851 at the family home one mile east of Cascade. She was one of a family of nine children, all of whom have preceded her in death.

She passed away March 3, 1934 at the homestead near Cascade where she had spent her entire lifetime.

She married Thomas A. Hamil. March 10, 1880 and was preceded by him in death November 17, 1900. To this union four children were born, one of whom, Mary Bessie Aitchison preceded her in death in 1931. Those surviving are James S., at home, Charles A. who resides near Cedar Falls, and Gerald T. who lives near Cascade.

She came from a hardy pioneer family who were among the early settlers of Dubuque county. They came to Dubuque county and started building their home in 1845.

Early in her youth she joined the Methodist Episcopal church and remained a loyal worker throughout her lifetime. She was always a loyal and true friend and good neighbor.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock in the Community Church. Rev. Charles Rabenburg, the pastor, officiating and internment was made in the Cascade Protestant Cemetery. The casket bearers were O.J. Winters, A.W. Aitchinson, Fred Lehner Jr., Ed Reiter, P.J. Conlin, N.J. Hoffman, Will Moore, and C.H. Macomber.

Relatives and friends from a distance attending the funeral were: Mr. and Mrs. Harold Gilson, Evanston, Illinois; Mr. and Mrs. Walter Gilson, Waterloo; Miss Mabel Gilson of Newton; Elex Sheldon and two daughters, Muscatine; Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Clemens and Mrs. Jennie Sheldon, Manchester; Mrs. Chester Cole and Harry Smith, Des Moines; Mr. and Mrs. Harry Adolphsen, Cedar Falls; Mr. and Mrs. Jake Leytem and W.J. O’Brien, Dubuque; Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Martin; Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Martin Jr., Mr. and Mrs. Willis Martin, Mrs. Herbert Crocker and Elmer Martin of Stanwood.
