Elmer John Hilkin
(July 6, 1921 - April 17, 2014

Elmer John Hilkin, 92, formerly of 1817 Rhomberg Avenue, passed away Thursday, April 17, 2014 at Stonehill Care Center.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Military rites will be conducted by the American Legion Post 6. Friends may call after 9 a.m. Tuesday at the church

Elmer was born July 6, 1921, in St. Catherine, Iowa, son of Albert and Rose (Butlett) Hilkin. He married Jeanette Meis, November 11, 1948 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Dubuque.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and was a 50 year member of the American Legion Post 6.

He was employed at the former Dubuque Packing Company for 35 years and at American Trust and Savings Bank for four years until he retired.

He was a member of Holy Trinity parish.

Surviving is his wife, Jeanette Hilkin, of Dubuque; three sons, James (Judy) Hilkin, of

Burlington, IA, Daniel (Jen) Hilkin, of Fremont, NE, and Chris (Tara) Hilkin, of

Dubuque; four daughters, Lois (Terrence) Hirsch, of Fitchburg, Wisc., Rose (Doug) Bowers, of Waukesha, Wisc., Lynn (Dan) Chapman, of Dubuque, and Mary (Larry) Hird, of Bernard, IA; 18 grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Florence Meis, of Holy Cross, IA.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Marcella O’Hea; three brothers-in-law, Steve O’Hea, Joe Meis, and Lester Willenbring and a sister-in-law, Leora Willenbring.

The family wishes to thank Elmer’s Stonehill family for their loving care.

The family requests no flowers; An Elmer J. Hilkin Memorial has been established.

Hoffmann-Schneider Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 1640 Main St., is in charge of arrangements.
