Florence E. Gorton, 67, of 3599 Crescent Court, died from the effects of Type 1 diabetes at 12:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 19, 2003, at home, surrounded by her family.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Grandview United Methodist Church. Burial will be in the Asbury (Iowa) Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 Kennedy Road. Friends also may call after 10 a.m. Saturday at the church.

She was born on Feb. 17, 1936, in Davenport, Iowa, daughter of Charles and Ruth (Warner) Hintermeister.

She graduated from Davenport High School in 1954. She then worked at McKinley Elementary School in Davenport.

She married Herman Gorton on July 15, 1961, at Grandview Baptist Church, Davenport. After marrying, they moved to Dubuque. She worked at International Harvester Truck Sales and Service until shortly before the birth of her first child in November 1964.

She was active in her church, Grandview United Methodist Church, giving hundreds of hours of volunteer service over her 40 years of membership.

She had a special interest and talent for caring for babies. She was a devoted foster parent for more than a decade through Hillcrest Family Services, caring for infants until placement.

She enjoyed gardening, with a special love for roses. She also enjoyed cooking, baking, golfing, shopping and reading. She was a frequent auction-goer and an avid collector.

Florence especially loved spending time with her family and relished holidays and other special occasions that brought the entire family together.

Surviving are her husband, Herman Gorton, of Dubuque; four sons, Bill (Beth) Gorton, of Urbana, Iowa, Dean (Tami) Gorton, of Brandon, Iowa, Kenneth (Ligia) Gorton, of Rockville, Md., and Mark (Mandy) Gorton, of La Motte, Iowa; a daughter, Ann Gorton, of Hyattsville, Md.; 10 grandchildren; and six siblings, Judy (Mike) Compton, Rachel (Larry) Durr, Mary Dwinal and Phillip (Marian) Hintermeister, all of Davenport, David (Marlene) Hintermeister, of Broken Arrow, Okla., and Donald (Sandra) Hintermeister, of Springfield, Mo.

She was preceded in death by her parents and eight siblings.

A Florence Gorton Memorial Fund has been established.

The family wishes to extend sincere gratitude for the compassion and support of Hospice of Dubuque, Gwen Mullinex and Deb Rahe.
