Clarence J. "Bill" Cummings, 87, of 2955 Kaufmann Ave., formerly of 1304 Lincoln Ave., died at 11:50 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 20, 2003, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque, surrounded by his family.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 1700 Lincoln Ave. Burial will be in Dubuque Memorial Gardens, south of Dubuque, where military rites will be accorded by the American Legion, Dubuque Post 6. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., where there will be a parish wake service at 4 p.m.
Mr. Cummings was employed at the former General Dry Battery in Dubuque for 10 years. He later was employed by the city of Dubuque Street Department for 30 years, retiring in 1977.
He was born on Feb. 2, 1916, in Rickardsville, Iowa, son of William and Anna (McCann) Cummings. He married Florence L. Lewis on June 30, 1937, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Dubuque.
He served with the Army during World War II in Germany.
He was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church and its Holy Name Society. He also was a member of the American Legion, Dubuque Post 6.
He enjoyed playing cards and traveling. He was an avid fan of the Chicago Bears and Iowa Hawkeyes.
He especially treasured time spent with his wife, children and grandchildren.
Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Florence L. Cummings; a daughter, Judy A. (Bob) Lucke, of Bellevue, Iowa; three sons, Roger A. Cummings and David J. (Julie) Cummings, both of Dubuque, and James T. (Quanda) Cummings, of Telford, Pa.; a daughter-in-law, Karen A. Cummings, of Dubuque; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Loretta Koester, of Dubuque.
He was preceded in death by a son, Donald R. Cummings, on June 9, 2000; and two brothers, William and Raymond Cummings.
A Clarence J. Cummings Memorial Fund has been established.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Schreiber and the nurses and staff of 4W at Mercy for their care and concern for Bill.
