Gerald J. Steffen, 81, of 3429 Glencove Lane, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 2003, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Resurrection Catholic Church. Entombment will be in Resurrection Garden Mausoleum at Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 Kennedy Road, where there will be a parish scripture wake service at 7 p.m.

Mr. Steffen worked at John Deere Dubuque Works for more than 27 years prior to retiring.

He was born on July 16, 1922, in Luxemburg, Iowa, son of Clem and Catherine (Grenier) Steffen. He married Viola Mills on Jan. 29, 1947, at St. Columbkille's Catholic Church, Dubuque.

Gerald was a loving husband, father and uncle and will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

He was a die-hard Cubs and Hawks fan. He enjoyed country music, camping, a good game of euchre and spending time with his family and friends.

Gerald was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the United Commercial Travelers of America and the United Automobile Workers Local 94. He also was a longtime member of Resurrection Catholic Church.

Surviving are his wife, Viola (Mills) Steffen, of Dubuque; a daughter-in-law, Carol (Bob) Dietzel, of East Dubuque, Ill.; two brothers, Reynold Steffen, of Guttenberg, Iowa, and Jerome (Lorraine) Steffen Sr., of Peosta, Iowa; a sister, Lorraine Heisler, of Dubuque; four brothers-in-law, Bernell (Jan) Mills, of Preemption, Ill., Merlin (Bette) Mills, of Palm Beach, Fla., and Elmer and Harold Mills, both of Dubuque; three sisters-in-law, Eileen Steffen, of Dickeyville, Wis., Ruth Davis, of Sherrill, Iowa, and Pearl Bennett, of Chicago; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Curtis Steffen, on Feb. 10, 1994; a daughter, Cynthia Steffen, on July 25, 2003; and four brothers, Edward, Sylvester, Andrew and Francis Steffen.

Memorials may be given to Resurrection Catholic Church.

The family would like to thank the staff at Mercy Medical Center Cardiac Medical Unit, especially Barb and Peg, and Sr. Maureen Fury, Rev. Hauer, Sr. Francine and Deacon Jorgenson at Resurrection Parish. And to all the doctors and staff at Medical Associates Clinic, especially Dr. C. Sinsky, and to all our family, friends and neighbors for all their love and support.
