ASBURY, Iowa - Bernice M. Pfeiler, 86, of 2257 Crown Point Road, Asbury, died Sunday, Dec. 14, 2003, at home.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Resurrection Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. John the Baptist Cemetery, Centralia. Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. today at Egelhof, Siegert and Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 Kennedy Road, Dubuque, where there will be a wake service at 2 p.m. Friends also may call from 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

She was born on May 3, 1917, in Balltown, daughter of Joseph J. and Magdalena (Pfohl) Habel.

She married Raymond Pfeiler on Oct. 18, 1938, at St. Francis Catholic Church, Balltown. They farmed their entire married life together in rural Epworth, Peosta and Centralia.

She was active in church organizations at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Peosta for more than 60 years.

She was a chairman of the Dubuque County Farm Bureau Women and was named the Dubuque County Farm Bureau Mother of the Year. She was instrumental in organizing the Dubuque County Dairy Princess, Dubuque County Fair Women's Food Stand and the Creative Arts exhibit at the Dubuque County Fair.

Bernice enjoyed baking, cooking, crafts, gardening and was very creative with art, poetry and music.

Surviving are her husband, Raymond Pfeiler, of Asbury; three children, Donald (Karen) Pfeiler, of Cedar Rapids, Mary Ann (Bill) Kleis, of Rochester, Minn., and Kathleen (Denis) Wagner, of Asbury; a daughter-in-law, Rose Pfeiler, of Dubuque; 18 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Roy (Viola) Pfeiler; four sisters-in-law, Delores Habel, Lorraine Pfeiler, Mabel Wilgenbusch and Frances Heiderscheit; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, George Pfeiler; a grandson, Jimmy Wagner; two brothers, Harold and Leon Habel; and a sister, Marcella Jaeger.

A Bernice Pfeiler Memorial Fund has been established.

The family would like to thank the nurses on third floor at Mercy Medical Center and D&D Assisted Home Care for their loving care.
