Sister Irene Hellman, 66, of Holy Family Hall, died at 4:15 a.m. Monday, Dec. 15, 2003, at the Holy Family Hall Infirmary.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in Mount St. Francis Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel, where there will be a wake service at 7:30 p.m. The Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 Kennedy Road, is in charge of arrangements.

Sister Irene ministered in the Iowa schools of Dubuque (Holy Trinity) and Ossian and in Hazel Crest, Ill. She served as the treasurer of the Sisters of St. Francis from 1982 to 1993. She also was the administrator of Alverno Apartments until illness forced her to move to Holy Family Hall.

She was born on March 16, 1937, in Bancroft, Iowa, daughter of Leo and Emma (Elsbecker) Hellman.

She entered the Sisters of St. Francis on Aug. 25, 1955, and made her final profession of religious vows on Aug. 12, 1961.

Surviving are a sister, Marie (Alvin) Recker; brothers, Elmer (Lucille), Albert (Shirley) and Dennis (Donna); a sister-in-law, Leona Hellman; and the Franciscan Sisters with whom she shared 47 years of her life.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Clarence, Arnold and Art; and a sister, Louise.

Memorials may be given to the Sisters of St. Francis.
