Rita Ann Spahn, 78, of Stonehill Care Center, formerly of 3102 Asbury Road, died Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003, at the care center.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Siegert-Casper Colonial Funeral Home, 390 N. Grandview Ave., where there will be a rosary at 4:30 p.m.

Mrs. Spahn worked as a registered nurse at the former Xavier Hospital for many years.

She was born on Nov. 2, 1925, in Waterloo, Iowa, daughter of Joseph and Mary L. (Schilling) Kurth. She married John C. Spahn on Sept. 18, 1948, in Waterloo; he died on Oct. 14, 1979.

She was a 1947 graduate of the former Mercy Hospital School of Nursing, Dubuque.

She was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church.

Surviving are three daughters, Sara Ann (Michael) Wright and Amy Jo (Willy) Gutierrez, both of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Mary Kay (Jay) Jellison, of Dubuque; five sons, James J. (Terri) Spahn, of Cedar Rapids, Joseph W. (Lora) Spahn, of Asbury, Iowa, John R. Spahn, of Bettendorf, Iowa, Jeffrey K. (Cathy) Spahn, of Dubuque, and Justin A. (Karen) Spahn, of Glenwood, Iowa; 16 grandchildren, Peter J. and Margaret Ann Wright, Nicole, Brian and Matthew Jellison, K.C. (Amanda) and Keith Spahn, Jennifer (Nathan) Boyes, Joseph S. and Julianne M. Spahn, Heather, Heidi, Hannah and Jesse Spahn and Raleigh and Rileigh Spahn; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Lawrence N. Kurth, of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and the Rev. Earl Kurth, SJ, of Milwaukee; and two sisters, Helen Racz, of Warren, Ohio, and Sr. Mary Adeline Kurth, OSF, of Dubuque.

She also was preceded in death by her parents and seven siblings.

A Rita Ann Spahn Memorial Fund has been established.

The family would like to thank the nurses, aides and other staff members at Stonehill Care Center who have touched Rita's life over the past three years, especially for the loving care she received over the past few days.
