Richard C. Henschel, 87, of Luther Manor, formerly of 835 Valentine Drive, died Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003, at Luther Manor.

Services will be at 12:30 p.m. Saturday in Mueller Memorial Chapel at Linwood Cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by the American Legion, Dubuque Post 6. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery. Friends may call from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at Siegert-Casper Colonial Funeral Home, 390 N. Grandview Ave.

He was born on April 3, 1916, in Chicago, son of Ernst and Ida (Singer) Henschel. He married Mildred Garrels on July 20, 1944, in Van Vliet Chapel at the University of Dubuque. They would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in July.

He graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 1934. He worked with the Civilian Conservation Corp. and attended the University of Dubuque for two years.

He entered the Army and served in the Pacific Theater. He was discharged as first lieutenant.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Farm Bureau, Dubuque Board of Realtors, Iowa Association of Realtors, National Association of Realtors, C.B. Radio Club, Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, a charter member of Roofers Local 232 and a former member of Home Builders Association.

Richard was a good businessman and was active in land development. He loved his family and had an optimistic outlook toward life.

Surviving are his wife, Mildred Henschel, of Dubuque; seven children, Mark (Nora) Henschel, of Chicago, Beverly (Dr. Victor) Firmani, of Robstown, Texas, Peggy Henschel, of Fort Collins, Colo., Tom (Sheri) Henschel, of Dubuque, June Henschel, of Rochester, Minn., Richard, Jr. (Tammy) Henschel, of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Pamela (Michael) Tidwell, of Phoenix, Ariz.; 10 grandchildren, Leah (Donald) Swinney, Jason Henschel, Elizabeth Henschel, Paul Brillhart, Mike Brillhart, Alex Thompson, Melissa Henschel, Megan Henschel, Kayla Halverson and Christina Heide; a great-granddaughter, Alexis; and a brother, George Henschel, of Sparks, Nev.

He was preceded in death by 10 brothers and sisters.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church.
