DYERSVILLE, Iowa -Martin C. "Marty" Bockenstedt, 70, of Dyersville, died Tuesday, Dec. 2, 2003, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, following a brief bout with leukemia.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Francis Xavier Basilica, Dyersville, with the Rev. Douglas Loecke officiating. Burial will be in St. Boniface Cemetery, New Vienna. Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. Friday at Kramer Funeral Home, Dyersville, where there will be a parish scripture service at 4 p.m.

He was born on March 10, 1933, in Petersburg, son of Thomas and Agatha (Bohnenkamp) Bockenstedt.

He married Virgene Vaske on Feb. 9, 1954, in New Vienna. They farmed in the New Vienna/Dyersville area from 1956 to 1997.

He was president of the New Vienna Area Historical Society. He was a tour guide at the Heritage House Museum in New Vienna. In recent years, he was a tour guide and company driver for the former Ertl Co., more recently known as Racing Champions.

He was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, New Vienna, and St. Francis Xavier Basilica, Dyersville. He was a founding member of the St. Boniface Adult Choir, where he was director for many years. He most recently was a member of the St. Francis Xavier Basilica Choir. He also was a member of the Tri-County Sportsman Club. He was a volunteer at Oak Crest Manor for many years.

In 1992, he received the Governors Leadership Award for his outstanding community service by the state of Iowa Community Betterment Program.

Marty's life revolved around his family. He loved to travel and visited many of the tourist attractions in the country. He loved sports and he loved to garden. He was very proud of his flowers.

Surviving are his wife, Virgene, of Dyersville; a daughter, Connie Drees, of Cedar Rapids; a son, Larry (Luetta) Bockenstedt, of Dyersville; seven grandchildren, Lynne (Ken) Vorwald, Laura (Troy) DeFlieger, Mark (fiancee, Lisa Walter) Davis and Tricia, Travis, Troy and Trent Bockenstedt; four great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Marissa, Morgan and Brooke Vorwald; two brothers, Clarence (Alice) Bockenstedt, of New Vienna, and Laverne "Toby" (Dula) Bockenstedt, of Colesburg; and two sisters, Alice Bockenstedt and Grace (John) Kirsch, both of Dyersville.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Eugene.

The family wishes to thank the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Oncology physicians and staff for their wonderful care and concern.
