Mary E. Keas, 90, of Alexandria, Va., formerly of Dubuque, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2003.
After private burial, Mary was laid to rest in St. Mary's Cemetery, Alexandria. The Jefferson Funeral Chapel, Alexandria, was in charge of arrangements.
She was born in Dubuque, daughter of George and Nellie Keas, one of five children.
She graduated with a journalism degree from George Washington University, Washington, D.C.
She was employed by the War Office, specifically the Department of the Army before and during World War II. As a civilian employee of the military, she worked in Trinidad, Brazil and Belgium.
From 1946 to 1950, she was stationed in Germany as an employee of the United States office of the Military Government for Germany. She lived in apartments Hitler had built for the Germany workingmen. As part of the United States military assistance program, she aided in the revival of postwar Germany.
From 1959 on, she worked for the Army, Air Force and as part of the General Counsel of the GSA. She was on special detail at the White House during the Kennedy Administration. She retired from the Pentagon in 1973.
Surviving are three nieces, a nephew and many grandnieces and grandnephews.
