Dr. Clark A. "Doc" Metz, 92, of Heritage Manor, formerly of Weland Gardens, Sunset Park, Dubuque, and Momence, Ill., died at 10:40 a.m. Monday, Dec. 1, 2003, at Heritage Manor.

Per his request, Dr. Metz donated his body to medical science at the Des Moines University Osteopathic Medical Center. Family and friends will gather from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Miller Funeral Home, East Dubuque, Ill.

He was born on April 28, 1911, in Clarence Center, N.Y., son of John Uriah and Annice (Berry) Metz. He married Kathryn Spading on May 18, 1946, in Brooklyn, Iowa; she preceded him in death on Feb. 12, 1997.

He was a veteran of the Army, having served during World War II.

Dr. Metz was a practicing veterinarian in Momence until September 1977, when he moved to Dubuque to be closer to his son, John.

He enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. He loved animals, spending time on the farm and going for rides.

Surviving are his children, John (Shirley) Metz, and their children, Sara, Nora and Brent, of Cuba City, Wis.; Dave (Deb) Metz, and their children, Anne and Laura, of Staunton, Va.; Susan Williams, and her children, Paul, Ross and Kathryn, of Glastonbury, Conn.; and James (Ruth) Metz, and their children, Burton, Owen and Eric, of Beaver Dam, Wis.

He also was preceded in death by a grandson, Drew Metz.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Alzheimer's Association, Greater Iowa Chapter, 1690 Elm St., Suite 140, Dubuque, Iowa 52001.

Special thanks to the caring and dedicated staff at Weland Gardens (Sunset Park), where Doc lived for more than six years. Thanks also to the staff at Heritage Manor, where Doc lived the last two months.
