Mr. Edward Joseph McFarland, 84, a lifelong resident of Dubuque, died Thursday, Nov. 27, 2003, in Phoenix, Ariz., where he spent his final year, following a long illness.

The services will be at 10 a.m. today at St. Theresa's Catholic Church, Phoenix. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery, Phoenix.

Mr. McFarland worked at General Dry Battery Factory for 18 years. He also worked as a toolmaker at John Deere Dubuque Works for 27 years.

He graduated from Sacred Heart School and Dubuque Senior High School.

He served in the Army during World War II, where he received the Bronze Star. He returned home and married Angela Kuhl on Oct. 18, 1948.

He was a longtime member of the Dubuque Amateur Radio Club. He also was a member of the American Legion, Dubuque Post 6. Edward was a volunteer for the Dubuque Historical Society.

Surviving are his wife, Angela; five children, Karen Thomson, Stephen McFarland, Nancy Alling, Linda Kirkpatrick and Richard McFarland; 11 grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, John; and a sister, Mary Dalton.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Dubuque Area Residential Care and the American Cancer Society. Donations may be mailed to 4202 N. 47th St., Phoenix, Ariz. 85018.
