Sister Mary Laurayne Mahoney, PBVM

Sister Mary Laurayne Mahoney, PBVM, 89, died Thursday, Nov. 20, 2003, at Mount Loretto Motherhouse.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Mount Loretto. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Key West, Iowa. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Mount Loretto, where there will be a wake service at 7 p.m. The Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, is in charge of arrangements.

Sister Laurayne was born on Oct. 6, 1914, in Lycurgus, Iowa, daughter of Michael and Angeline (Connor) Mahoney.

She entered the Sisters of the Presentation after graduating from St. Joseph High School, Mason City, Iowa, in 1932. She professed her perpetual vows on Feb. 5, 1938.

She received a bachelor of arts degree in business education from Briar Cliff College, Sioux City, Iowa, and her master's degree from Catholic University, Washington, D.C. Further graduate studies were done at Loras College, Dubuque, the University of Iowa, Iowa City, the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, and Notre Dame (Ind.) University.

Her teaching career, spanning 69 years, took her to Whittemore, Storm Lake, Mason City, Waukon, Algona and Fort Dodge, Iowa, and Wahlert High School, Dubuque. Her ministries included principal, assistant librarian, archivist and computer lab supervisor. She retired to Mount Loretto Motherhouse in 1995, where she continued with community service and prayer and her hobbies of reading, listening to music and observing the wonders of nature until her death.

Surviving are a sister, Mrs. Beatrice Welch; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; and the Sisters of the Presentation, with whom she shared life for 71 years.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Ambrose, Edward and Peter Mahoney; and four sisters, Mrs. Mary Donovan, Mrs. Angela Quinlan, Mrs. Margaret Quinlan and Mrs. Bernadetta Kummer.
