Mrs. Dale H. (Shirley A. Bennett) Miller, 68, of 2755 Andrew Court, died at 11 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 20, 2003, at home, surrounded by her family, after a long, courageous battle with cancer.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., where there will be the parish wake service at 4 p.m.

Mrs. Miller was formerly employed in housekeeping at Loras College for 10 years, until her retirement.

She was born on March 8, 1935, in Dubuque, daughter of Arthur and Helen (Link) Roeth.

Shirley married William H. Bennett on March 3, 1956, in Mount Carroll, Ill.; he died on Sept. 19, 1973. She later married Dale H. Miller on June 23, 1990, at Immanuel Congregational United Church of Christ; he died on July 19, 2002.

She was a bowler and a member of the Dubuque Women's Bowling Association for many years.

She enjoyed going to the casinos and playing family card games. Shirley liked being with her pet cat, Socks.

Surviving are four daughters, Deborah H. (Stephen) Earle, Diane C. (Jerry) Roeth and Denise R. (Michael) Daniels, all of Dubuque, and Dawn M. (Dennis) Fiedler, of Scales Mound, Ill.; two sons, Dwayne H. (Jane) Bennett, of Roanoke, Va., and David J. (Melinda Harbaugh) Bennett, of Dubuque; 16 grandchildren; three stepdaughters, Linda L. (Michael) Budde, of Peosta, Iowa, Deborah L. (Eric) Reinhardt, of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Kristine J. (Joseph) Miller, of Swisher, Iowa; a stepson, Randall L. (Karen) Miller, of Dubuque; six step grandchildren; and two step great-grandchildren.

She also was preceded in death by three half-brothers, Jack Roeth, Fred Roeth and Patrick Cahill.

A Shirley A. Miller Memorial Fund has been established.

The family would like to thank Hospice of Dubuque, especially Amy K., Dr. Lally and the staff of the Wendt Regional Cancer Center, Fr. Ardel Barta and Deacon Tim LoBianco for all their support and prayers. A special thank-you to all of our family and friends for their concern, help and love during Mom's illness.
