Muriel Gayman

Telegraph Herald - Nov 21, 2003

Muriel Gayman, loving mother, 89, of the Dubuque Nursing and Rehab Center, formerly of 226 S. Grandview Ave., died peacefully Monday, Nov. 17, 2003, at Dubuque Nursing and Rehab.

Services will be at noon Saturday at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 Kennedy Road, where friends may call after 11 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery.

She was born on May 8, 1914, in Plentywood, Mont., while her parents homesteaded farm land near Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada.

The day that World War II ended, the entire family of four was naturalized in Fort Lewis, Wash. Her father served as a harness maker in the Army during the war. Later, the family moved to Toledo, Ohio, where Muriel swam competitively while attending Scott High School.

After high school, she worked in the credit department of Lamson's Department Store, where she met her future husband, Vaughn Gayman. They were married on Feb. 11, 1938, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Dubuque.

She loved to read stories about the United Kingdom and early British royalty and had the opportunity to tour Great Britain in 1984. She thoroughly enjoyed many aspects of "the old country."

Back at home, she delighted in watching and identifying birds from her kitchen window and had fun decorating the house with statues and pictures of her favorite felines.

Muriel played contract bridge with her closest friends in Dubuque for many years, and noted many times recently how she had outlived all of her bridge partners.

Surviving are three sons, Lloyd (Jackie), of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Greg (Jody), of Dubuque, and Mark (Jean), of Provo, Utah; two grandchildren; and a niece.

She was preceded in death by her beloved parents, her husband, a brother, aunts and cousins.
