Leonard W. Dress, Sr.

Our loving father and husband, Leonard W. "Barney" Dress, Sr., 82, 960 Wilson St., died at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, 1998, at The Finley Hospital after a brief illness.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Nativity Catholic church. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by the American Legion Dubuque Post 6. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., where there will be a parish wake service at 5 p.m.

Mr. Dress was formerly employed as a nursing assistant at the Veterans Hospital in Iowa City. After moving to Dubuque he was employed for a short time at the former Dubuque Packing Co. He was last employed at St. Regis Paper Co, retiring in 1967.

He was born Aug. 1, 1915, in Dubuque, son of Joseph and Katherine (Schroeder) Dress. He married Violet I. Lightfoot on Nov. 27, 1954, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Dubuque.

He was a World War II Army veteran, having served in France, Germany and Korea. He was a member of Nativity Catholic Church, the American Legion Dubuque Post 6 and a lifetime member of the Disabled American Veterans. He was an umpire for the Dubuque City Softball League. He loved being outdoors and enjoyed fishing in his spare time. He also liked to bowl and play fast-pitch softball. "Barney" especially enjoyed being with his family.

Surviving are his wife, Violet I. Dress; 3 daughters, Kathy I. (Tom) Wall, Rosemarie A. Dress and Sherry L. (Gerry) Hartford, all of Dubuque; 3 sons, Leonard W., Jr. (Lorrain) Dress, Bill J. (Sharren) Dress and Ed L. Dress, all of Dubuque; a special grandson/"son", Mike S. (Theresa) Beckett, of Dubuque; a step-daughter, Viola V. Butteris, of Dubuque; 19 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren; and 2 sisters, Lucille Elliott, of Dubuque, and Matilda Nashlund, of Pensacola, Fla.

He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Tina Kennett in June 1981; a great grandson, Devin Dress, in August 1997; a brother, Harry Dress; and 6 sisters, Josephine Maeder, Viola Andressen, Dorothy Murphy, Marie Clancy, Mildred Weiland and Hilda Schroeder.
