Violet Irene Dress

Violet I. Dress, 85, of Sunnycrest Manor, passed away at 4:01 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2013, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.

Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 4 at Nativity Catholic Church. To celebrate Violet's life, friends may visit from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 3, at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St.

Violet was born on Feb. 4, 1927 in Dubuque, daughter of William O. and Irene (Block) Lightfoot. She attended school at Prescott and in Rickardsville, Iowa.

She married Leonard W. Dress, Sr. on Nov. 27, 1954, in Dubuque; he preceded her in death on Jan. 31, 1998.

Violet was a homemaker most of her life, raising their children and keeping their house in order. She worked as a dietary specialist at Xavier Hospital and later at Loras College.

She was a lifelong member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.

Violet spent many enjoyable hours doing embroidery, cross-stitching and crocheting. She was a beautiful quilter and seamstress. She enjoyed family functions and loved her family. Violet and Leonard enjoyed walking leisurely around Dubuque.

Surviving are her children, Rosemarie A. Dress, Sherry L. (Gerry) Hartford, Leonard W. (Lorrain) Dress, Jr., Bill J. (Sharren) Dress and Edward L. (Charlotte) Dress, all of Dubuque, and Kathy I. (Tom) Wall of Asbury, Iowa; 22 grandchildren; 37 great grandchildren; 5 great great grandchildren; 2 brothers, Floyd "Pete" Lightfoot, of Asper, Wyo., and Andrew "Skip" (Shirley) Lightfoot, of Aurora, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Viola Butteris; 3 sisters, Viola "Toots" Powell, Bernice Armbruster and Genevieve "Jennie" Beversdorf; 3 brothers, Arnold, William and Frank Lightfoot; a grandson, Michael Steven Beckett; a granddaughter, Tina Lynn Kennett; and 2 great grandchildren, Michael Anthony Zimmerman and Devin Michael Dress.
