Mrs. Rainer J. (Marie L.) Schmitt, 95, of Luther Manor, formerly of 1842 Carter Road and the Sherrill (Iowa) area, died at 5 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 16, 2003, at Luther Manor.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Anthony's Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., where there will be a parish wake service at 4:30 p.m.

She was born on Jan. 16, 1908, in Lore, Iowa, daughter of Bernard and Katherine (Potts) Schmitt.

She married Rainer J. Schmitt on June 28, 1933, at St. Philomena's Catholic Church, Asbury, Iowa; he preceded her in death on Oct. 4, 1969. She and her husband farmed in the Sherrill area for 40 years.

She was a member of St. Anthony's Parish and Rosary Society. She quilted for many years with St. Anthony's Quilting Circle.

Marie was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

Surviving are two daughters, Eileen M. (Dr. Joseph) Roby, of Owensboro, Ky., and Marian K. Schmitt, of Dubuque; two sons, Cletus F. (Judy) Schmitt and Joseph P. (Sue) Schmitt, both of Dubuque; eight grandchildren, Christy Ann (Steve) Metzger, of Glasgow, Ky., Ellen (Scott) Hayden, of Owensboro, Laura (Gary) Taylor, of Charleston, S.C., Lori (Don) Latham, of Elgin, Ill., and Randy (Monica), Jackie, Eric and Kasey Schmitt, all of Dubuque; eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Katherine Klein, of Dubuque; and a brother, Carl Schmitt, of Dubuque.

She also was preceded in death by two sisters, Lucille Tarnutzer and Marcella "Sally" Sahm; and three brothers, Paul, August "Gus" and Bernard Schmitt.
