Richard C. "Dick" Dempsey, 75, of Loveland, Colo., formerly of Dubuque, died Sunday, Nov. 2, 2003, in Loveland.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Allnutt Funeral Service Hunter Chapel, Loveland. Burial will be at 2 p.m. in Fort Logan National Cemetery, Denver.

He was born on Nov. 3, 1927, in Dubuque, son of Charles F. and Lillian (Heim) Dempsey. He married Jeanette "Janet" Ames on Dec. 26, 1953.

He attended school in Dubuque and graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 1945.

He was drafted into the Army in 1946 and served 18 months of active duty, then 18 years in the Army Reserves, attaining the rank of Chief Warrant Officer.

Dick was in the newspaper business for more than 40 years, starting in advertising at the Dubuque Telegraph Herald and progressing to personnel manager. In 1973, he left the Telegraph Herald and moved to Fort Collins, Colo., with his family to take a position at the Fort Collins Coloradoan. In 1977, Gannett transferred him to the Little Falls, Minn., Daily Transcript, where he was a general manager. He was promoted to commercial printing of the St. Cloud, Minn., Daily Times. In 1985, he was transferred to Gannett headquarters in Arlington, Va., in the offset division where he oversaw national plants that printed USA Today.

He and Janet retired in 1988, moving back to Fort Collins to be near their children and grandchildren. They moved to Loveland in 1996.

Surviving are his wife, Janet; a son, Richard "Rick" C. (Debbie) Dempsey II; a daughter, Denise G. (Shaun) Hackbarth; and five grandchildren, two step grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
