SHERRILL, Iowa - Joseph G. "Joe" Maiers, 69, of 5400 South Mound Road, Sherrill, died Sunday, Oct. 19, 2003, at home after a long, courageous battle with cancer.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Sherrill. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery, Dubuque. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Dennis Kitchen Funeral Home, 3860 Asbury Road, where there will be a wake service at 4 p.m. The Farley Fire Department also will meet at the funeral home today at 7 p.m.

Mr. Maiers farmed north of Holy Cross, Iowa, for 25 years. He then worked as owner and operator of Maiers Dairy Supply for 15 years. In later years, he worked at Linwood Cemetery and was last employed by the Dubuque Soccer Complex.

He was born on Feb. 3, 1934, in Holy Cross, son of Peter and Bertha (Clemen) Maiers. He married Shirley Hefel at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Holy Cross, on Feb. 8, 1955.

Joe enjoyed working on his antique tractor collection, fishing, playing cards and cutting grass. His pride and joy though was his family, which included many grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He will be greatly missed.

Surviving are his wife, Shirley Maiers, of Sherrill; four daughters, June Takeuchi, of Dublin, Calif., Ruth (Jim) Hinzmann and Beth (Nick) Kaufmann, both of Sherrill, and Bonnie Maiers, of Dubuque; two sons, Mark Maiers, of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Thomas (Debbie) Maiers, of Farley, Iowa; five sisters, Mary C. (Roger) Steffen, of Luxemburg, Iowa, Ann (David) Krapfl and Rosie (Greg) Helle, both of Edgewood, Iowa, Margaret (Vernon) Bockenstedt, of Earlville, Iowa and Carole Lattner, of Dubuque; two brothers, Bernard (Connie) Maiers, of Holy Cross and David (Dianne) Maiers, of Dubuque; 15 grandchildren, a great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A Joseph G. Maiers Memorial Fund has been established.
