George H. Reiter

George H. Reiter, 89, of 666 S. Bluff Road, S. Beloit, Ill., formerly of Dubuque, died at 8:25 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17, 2003, at home, surrounded by his family.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main Street, Dubuque, where friends may call after 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Dubuque.

Mr. Reiter worked for the former General Dry Battery, Dubuque, for 20 years until they closed. He then worked for John Deere Dubuque Works for more than 20 years, until his retirement.

He was born on Feb. 22, 1914, in Dubuque, son of Nicholas and Elizabeth (Grueneisen) Reiter. He married Marie C. Welter on March 12, 1938, at Holy Ghost Catholic Church, Dubuque; she preceded him in death on Dec. 29, 2001.

George served in the Civilian Conservation Corps for more than 10 years.

He was a member of the United Auto Workers Local 94 and the John Deere Retirees.

George and Marie moved to South Beloit in November of 2001 to be near their son, Ronald.

He enjoyed spending his spare time working in his woodshop.

Surviving are a son, Ronald G. (fiancee, Debra Hackett), of S. Beloit; five grandchildren, Candace Smith, Tracy Reiter, Tammy (John) Naugle, Wendy (Harry) Curry and Terri (Tony) Peacock; 10 great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Ruby Reiter, of Dubuque.

He was preceded in death by a son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Patricia Reiter; a grandson, Bradley R. Reiter; two sisters, Anna Norton and Susan Purcell; and seven brothers, Leo, Albert "A.J.," Theodore, Peter, John "Jack," Andrew and Eldon "Butch" Reiter.

A George H. Reiter Memorial Fund has been established.

The family wishes to thank the nurses and staff of the Beloit Regional Hospice, especially Judy, for their loving concern for George and the whole family.
