Joseph G. Schiessl, 92, of 1603 Jackson Street, died at 12:03 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, 2003, at home surrounded by his family.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Behr Funeral Home, 1491 Main St., where there will be a parish wake service at 4:30 p.m.

Mr. Schiessl worked for many years as a mechanic for Belsky Motors and later Shike-Richardson Motors. He later worked for several years as the maintenance man for St. Mary's Catholic Church.

Joseph was born on Nov. 25, 1910, in Durango, Iowa, son of John and Theresa (Schmid) Schiessl. He married Greta R. Kasten on Nov. 24, 1938, in Watertown, Wis.

He was an active member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and served as a Eucharistic Minister and an usher. He was a member and past treasurer of the Holy Name Society and a member of the Legion of Mary.

He also was a volunteer at the Washington Tool Library.

His life revolved around his loving wife and family. He especially enjoyed family get-togethers.

Surviving are his wife, Greta R. Schiessl; five daughters, Roann M. (Harry) Leitner, of Dubuque, Martha A. (David) Olson, of Highland Village, Texas, Mary A. (Dennis) Healy, of Port Byron, Ill., Carol M. (Tom) Smith, and Janet S. (Tony) George, both of Dubuque; two sons, Robert J. (Linda) Schiessl, of Seward, Neb. and John E. (Jacolyn) Schiessl, of Ridgefield, Wash.; 22 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and a sister, Marie VanDeWiel, of Dubuque.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Tony, in infancy, and Anton (Bernice) Schiessl; three sisters, Catherine Schiessl, Theresa Brehm and Mathilda Stoltz; four brothers-in-law, John Brehm, William Brehm, Arnold Stoltz, and William VanDeWiel; and a sister-in-law, Bernice Schiessl.

Memorials may be given to St. Mary's Catholic Church, 1584 White Street, Dubuque, Iowa 52001, or Hospice of Dubuque, 2255 Kennedy Road, Dubuque, Iowa 52002.
