Tom graduated from Wahlert High School in 1971.

He was a member of St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church and a former board member on the Stonehill Care Center Building & Ground Committee, the DASH swim organization and president of the Board of Directors for Barrington Lakes Association.

Tom loved to volunteer and spend his time outside. When not at work or supporting his three kids as they grew up through the DASH swim program, he enjoyed lending his time and talents around the neighborhood, working around the yard, and an occasional Sunday at the beach.

He also treasured tailgating on Saturdays in Iowa City while supporting the Hawkeyes and offering his home to entertain family and friends at any given time. Tom took great pride in his children and the young adults they have become.

Surviving are his wife, Barbara, of Dubuque; his children, Nick, of Sacramento, Calif., and Natalie and Ashley, both of Iowa City; three brothers, Chuck (Michelle) Hinz, of Marian, Iowa, Dave (Sue) Hinz and Mike Hinz, both of Dubuque; and 22 nieces and nephews and countless friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Elroy and LaVaune; and a sister-in-law, Carolyn Hinz.

A Thomas E. Hinz Memorial Fund has been established.
