John Chapman was born in Ireland on March 15,1841,and came to America in 1849 with his parents,Mr.and Mrs.Edward Chapman, pioneer settlers of Vernon township. In 1870 he moved to Hamilton County Iowa. He has lived on the same farm for about 50 years. He passed away on the family farm on Sept.11,1921. On Feb.10,1873,he was married to Miss Jennie Ristrim of Hamilton county and to them were born four children; Mrs. Albert Lund of Laurens,Ia., Mrs. Earl Smith of Marathon,Ia., Edward and William; the latter dying in infancy.He also leaves five grandchildren. And three brothers; Ben, Dave, William Chapman of Peosta,Ia. and two sisters; Mrs. Esther Desmond and Mrs.Catherine Ryan of Peosta,Ia. One brother,Ed Chapman preceded him in death in 1904. Relatives who traveled out to the funeral are; Dave Chapman, Mr.and Mrs. Ben Chapman,Mrs.Esther Desmond, Mrs. Mary Chapman and son Earl, all of Peosta. And Mr.and Mrs. Jay McCarthy and Mr.and Mrs. Fabian Beckett of Dubuque,Ia.
The funeral was held from the home Tuesday afternoon,with the Rev.F.A. Wilson of the M.E. church of Stratford in charge, and burial was in the South Marion cemetery in Hamilton county, Iowa. The pall bearers were friends of the family; Nels and Andrew Peterson, Albert Poulson, Alfred Erickson and August Carlson.
"Uncle John" as he was called by nearly everyone, was one of those kind and jovial men who make friends wherever they go. To a good old friend and father, may he rest in peace.
