Telegraph Herald newspaper Feb. 18,1935. John Ryan 81 a lifelong resident of Dubuque county. Died at the home of his son William,in Vernon township near Peosta,Saturday morning at 3:30 o'clock. Mr. Ryan had been in poor health for seven years. Mr. Ryan was born April 20,1853 near Peosta. He was the son of the late Mr.and Mrs. Richard Ryan natives of Ireland and pioneer residents of Vernon township.He was born on the Ryan farm in that township and lived all of his life there. In 1876 he marrid Catherine Chapman. She died there 13 years ago. He was a lifelong member of the Catholic faith and a attendant the Holy Family Church at the Monastery.Mr. Ryan was held in high esteem by a large group of friends and acquaintances. Surviving are his daughters; Mrs. George (Mary) Duschen, and Mrs. William C.(Elizabeth) Brown, and his sons Henry and William Ryan all of Peosta. The funeral will be held Monday morning at 8:30 o'clock from the home. To the Holy Family Church at the Monastery. Where a High Mass of requiem will be sung by the Rev. Father Placid McGhee. Who also read the prayers at the graveside. Six nephews acted as pall bearers; Bernard, Emmett, Edward, Merlin, David and Louis Chapman. Burial was in the adjoining Cemetery.
