John T. Tigges

John T. Tigges, 76, of 2240 Coates Street, died Wednesday evening, October 29, 2008 at Luther Manor.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Nativity Catholic Church, with Father Dwayne Thoman officiating. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Key West. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Hoffmann-Schneider Funeral Home, 1640 Main St., where there will be a wake service at 7:30 p.m.

He was born May 16, 1932 in Dubuque, son of John G. and Madonna (Heiberger) Tigges. He married Kathryn Johnson, April 22, 1954 at Holy Family Catholic Church, New Melleray.

John attended Holy Ghost grade school, graduated from the former Loras Academy in 1950 and Loras College in 1954.

He was employed at John Deere Dubuque Works and later at Penn Mutual Life Insurance Company as a life underwriter. In 1973 he began a life long career as an author and writer. He founded the Sinipee Writers Workshop and taught many writing seminars in Wisconsin and Iowa.

Mr. Tigges played violin since he was a child. He founded a society quartet “The Julien Strings”, and the Dubuque Pops Orchestra. He was business manager and violinist with the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra for many years.

He loved to travel with Kathy in his retirement; enjoyed reading, researching history and model railroading. He was an avid Hawkeye football and basketball fan.

John was a loving husband, father and grandfather.

He was a member of Nativity parish, their Guild and Rosary Society and the Milwaukee Road Historical Society.

Surviving are his wife, Kathy of over 54 years; his children, Julie (Carey) Lewis, of Dubuque, John (Marion) Tigges, of Glendale, AZ, Timothy (Bernadette) Tigges, of Sioux Falls, SD, Tracey (Mark) Ring and Jay (Brigette) Tigges, both of Dubuque; six grandchildren, Tony, Koji, Kyle, Andi, Michael, and Tyler; three step grandchildren, Melissa, Jason and Morgan; one great granddaughter, Makaila; and one sister, Phyllis Roth, of Dubuque.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother Norman John Tigges.

In lieu of flowers, a John Tigges Memorial has been established.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Hillard Salas, his nurse, Kathy, the Emergency Room staff, the third and fourth floor nurses at The Finley Hospital and the staff at Luther Manor for their care of John.
