Hazel Tigges
(June 24, 1928 - September 6, 2012)

Hazel Tigges, 84, of Dubuque was called home to be with her infant son and her parents on September 6, 2012 surrounded by her family.

Services will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, where friends may greet the family from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service. Rev. Kristian Kincaid will officiate. Interment will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may also greet the family from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m. Sunday at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 3860 Asbury Rd., Dubuque.

Hazel was born on June 24, 1928, in Boone, North Carolina. She was the daughter of Herbert and Katherine (Hurst) Knoernschild. She married Jerome Tigges on September 15, 1951, at Nativity Church in Dubuque. She graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in 1947.

She graduated from Dubuque Beauty Academy and then worked as a cosmetologist in several salons. She continued to give many of her friends and family perms and haircuts after she stopped working. She began her second career as an Avon representative in 1965 after moving back to Dubuque from Hazel Green, Wisconsin. She enjoyed the time she spent with her customers until mid 2011 when she retired due to health reasons.

It was at one of the dances at Center Grove that she caught the eye of Jerome “Romey” Tigges. They married five years later. Throughout the 61 years of their marriage Hazel and Romey enjoyed playing cards with friends, dancing on Thursday nights with their regular crowd, family vacations, and walking the mall together.

Hazel was an active member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church. Singing in the choir and helping with the SCRIP program were two of her many active roles in the parish. She also enjoyed going to lunch every month with her Senior High School Class of 1947 classmates.

She was a wonderful mother and a caring friend to many. Her family will remember her as an avid crocheter. She blessed many people with her homemade gifts including baby blankets for hospitals and lap warmers for nursing homes. All of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren have a special afghan or blanket that she crocheted for them.

She had a green thumb and was also the ultimate Christmas baker. She and Romey would bake dozens and dozens of Christmas cookies every year along with peanut brittle, fudge, date bars, and snowballs.

Those left to cherish her memory include Jerome, her husband of 61 years; her five children Deb (Rich) Hoffman and Ron (Sue) Tigges, both of Dubuque; Cathy (Patrick) Kane of Mission Viejo, California; Becky (Charlie) Bonifas of Burleson, Texas; and Mike (Lynn) Tigges of Aurora, Illinois; 14 grandchildren - Stacy (Steve) Ryan, Sarah Hoffman, Jason and Heather Kane, Brad and Jill Tigges, Jennifer Lenoch, Danielle (Jason) Horn, Samantha (Dustin) Goldman, Melissa (Andrew) Chansley, Matthew, Meggan, Melissa, and Michelle Tigges; 9 great-grandchildren with 2 on the way; sisters Margaret (Don) Lakin and Dorothy Omdalem; brothers John (Janet) and Ken (Sandy) Knoernschild; sisters-in-law Sr. Mary Rita Tigges, OSF, and Dorothy Tigges as well as many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Hazel was preceded in death by her infant son, Daniel William. Memorials may be given to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church and Hospice of Dubuque.

The family graciously thanks Dr. Hermann and his staff and Hospice of Dubuque for their excellent care and compassion as well as their patience with us during Mom’s illness, and our caring friends and relatives who reached out to us with their support and kindness during this difficult time.
