Dubuque Herald Newspaper Aug. 21, 1873 Mr. Thomas C. Grace a sketch of his life and character.Another of the highly respected citizens of Dubuque has departed this life at the ripe age of seventy five years. The memory of a man so much beloved by a large number of relatives and so greatly esteemed by a larger circle of personal friends and acquaintances deserves more than an oridinary funeral notice. Mr. Thomas C. Grace was born at New Church, County Kilkenny, Ireland in the year 1798, at the time of one of the important Irish rebellions.At the age of about twenty-five he married Miss Ellen Conway who survives him. He emigrated to America in 1850 and proceeded directly to Dubuque, Having been persuaded to do this by the influence of a brother who preceded him hither the year before as a menber of that branch of the monastic order who established a Monastery known as New Melleray in this county. The brother still lives there, and is known to the order and to the outside world as Brother Barnaby as he has been for the last thirty-five years. In this migration Mr.Grace brought with him a family of nine children.The oldest,Gerald is now living in Colorado. The second child was a daughter, named Catherine, now a sister of Charity at St.Paul,Minnesota, by the name of Sister Syphrosis. Another daughter,Margaret is the wife of ex-aiderman Nich C. Ryan of the city. A son by the name of Patrick, has continued to reside upon the homestead purchased by his father in Vernon township in 1850,nine miles from Dubuque.Another child was Ellen, now a sister of Charity at Harrisburg,Penn. And known to the Catholic establishment of which she is a member,as Mother Clara. Another daughter,Mary Ann is the wife of George A. Shannon. Another daughter,Johanna, who married John Ryan a surveyor. She died about 14 years ago in Allamakee county Iowa. Leaving two young childern. The youngest daughter, Anastasis,is the wife of Mr. Charles W. Hogan, a Contractor residing in St. Louis,Mo. The youngest son Thomas C. Grace jr.is a railroad contractor and resides in St.Louis, Mo. The Funeral will commence this morning,at nine o'clock, at the family residence and will be concluded today at the Monastery of New Melleray where the remains will be buried. Peace to his soul kindly remembrances for such a good and venerable man.
