Lt. Cmdr. Thomas S. Butler, Ret., 82, of 2422 University Ave., died Thursday, Sept. 18, 2003, at home.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Anthony''s Catholic Church. Inurnment of the cremated remains will be in St. Joseph''s Chapel Mausoleum at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Key West, Iowa, where military rites will be accorded by the American Legion, Dubuque Post 6. Friends may call after 9:30 a.m. Monday at the church.

Mr. Butler worked at St. Regis Paper Co. for 19 years, retiring in 1984.

He was born on May 7, 1921, in Oneida, Tenn., son of Jake and Nora (Sexton) Butler. He married his wife, Evelyn, on Nov. 15, 1943, in California.

He entered the Navy in 1938. While in the Navy, he served his country in both World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was a Pearl Harbor veteran and survivor. His Navy career transferred him all over the world, and in 1959, he was transferred to Dubuque, and had been living here ever since.

He was a member of the Navy League, Pearl Harbor Survivors and St. Regis Retirees. He also was a member of St. Anthony''s Catholic Church.

Surviving are his wife, Evelyn B. Butler; four sons, Thomas (Sandi) Butler, of Sacramento, Calif., Daniel Butler, of Houston, Texas, Mike (Jude) Butler, of Topeka, Kan. and Jim Butler, of Tacoma, Wash.; two daughters, Terri (Max) Andrews, of Manchester, Iowa, and Nanci Butler, of Dubuque; a brother, Jim Butler, of New York; a sister, Lucille Armstrong, of Riverside, Calif.; and 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Ginny Harkin.

The family requests no flowers. A Thomas S. Butler Memorial Fund has been established.
