Joseph W. Giese

Telegraph Herald - Sep 16, 2003

After calling his children home to be with him, Mr. Joseph W. "Joe" Giese, 82, of 847 Stone Ridge Place, went to join his wife, Sue, in the light and love of God on Saturday, Sept. 13, 2003.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by the American Legion, Dubuque Post 6. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 Kennedy Road, where there will be a wake service at 7:30 p.m.

Mr. Giese was the president of Giese Sheet Metal Co., before his retirement in 1988.

He was born on March 23, 1921, in Dubuque, son of Edwin W., Sr. and Gertrude (Zwack) Giese. He married Suzanne Kellard on Oct. 6, 1944, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Dubuque; she died on March 15, 2002.

Joe graduated from the former Loras Academy, Dubuque, and the University of Iowa, Iowa City. He served with the Navy during World War II.

Joe had been a member of the Dubuque Noon Optimist Club for many years and was the inspiration for the Investment Specialists Investment Club. He also was a member of Dubuque County Right to Life.

In retirement, he enjoyed traveling and golfing with his wife, Sue, and playing around on his computer. Joe loved his family; his children, grandchildren, and took great joy in seeing his first great-grandchild, Gracie Lueken.

He was an avid reader throughout his life. Always quick with a one-liner, we will miss his sense of humor.

Surviving are his four children, James (Cathy) Giese, Marilyn (Stephen "Ding") Bell, Ellen (John) Markham and Charlie (Linda) Giese, all of Dubuque; 15 grandchildren, Michael, Daniel and Carolyn Giese, Kristie, Gina, Beth and Stephanie Bell, Dawn (Chad) Lueken, Carrie, Brad and Craig Markham and Mark, Brett, Derek and Carter Giese; and a great-grandchild, Gracie Lueken. Also surviving is his older brother, Edwin W. Giese, Jr.

He also was preceded in death by a brother, William (Bill) Giese; his parents, Edwin W. Giese, Sr. and Gertrude (Zwack) Giese; and a grandson, Jeffrey Bell.

The family requests no flowers. Memorials may be given to Dubuque County Right to Life and Holy Trinity Catholic Church.
