DURANGO, Iowa - Ernest A. Skraby, 74, of 18317 Meadow View Drive, Durango, died at 7:47 a.m. Monday, Sept. 8, 2003, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.

Services will be at 11 a.m. today at Resurrection Catholic Church, Dubuque. Private family burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Dubuque. The Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 Kennedy Road, Dubuque, is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Skraby retired from Ideal Tool & Mfg. Co. in Chicago after 29 years of service, serving as corporate secretary the past 12 years.

He was born on July 9, 1929, in Chicago, son of George and Stella Skraby. He married Mary E. Clemens on June 18, 1954, at Holy Ghost Catholic Church, Dubuque; she preceded him in death on Oct. 7, 2000.

He graduated from Leo High School, Chicago, in 1947, and Loras College, Dubuque, in 1951.

He was a starting center/forward on the Loras College basketball team that won the Iowa Conference and Midlands Conference Championships for two consecutive years, in 1950 and 1951. He, along with his teammates, was inducted into the Loras College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1993.

He was an Army veteran of the Korean War.

He was a member of Resurrection Catholic Church, Dubuque, and a lifelong member of the R.J. Hagamann American Legion Post 495, of Chicago.

Surviving are two daughters, Sue (Barry) Beresik, of Houston, and Betsy (Jim) Patterson, of Amelia, Ohio; a son, Tom (Cindy) Skraby, of Carlsbad, Calif., eight grandchildren, Drew, Kristi and Kelly Patterson, Bryan and Nicole Beresik and Matthew, Kimberley and Eric Skraby; a brother, George Skraby, of Lakeview, Ark.; five sisters-in-law, Monica (Dr. Joseph) Locher, Margaret Becker and Evelyn Clemens, all of Dubuque, Helen (Rev. Wayne) Gjerde, of Ames, and Cindy (Edward) Krueger, of Appleton, Wis.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Memorials may be given to Abbey of Our Lady of New Claivaux, P.O. Box 80, Vina, Calif. 96092.
