Genevieve F. Bassler, 78, of Dubuque, formerly of Otter Creek, Iowa, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, Aug. 14, 2003, at home, after a long and brave battle with kidney failure.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, Otter Creek, with Monsignor. Thomas J. Ralph officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Lahey Funeral Home, Maquoketa, where there will be a vigil service at 4:30 p.m.

Mrs. Bassler was a homemaker and drove a school bus for Head Start.

Genevieve Frances Meyerhofer was born to John and Ida (Kramer) Meyerhofer on Oct. 26, 1924, in Stacyville, Iowa.

She married Eugene Paul Bassler, of Dubuque, on Dec. 24, 1943, in McCook, Neb. Eugene and Genevieve lived and farmed in rural Maquoketa most of their lives until moving to Dubuque five years ago when Genevieve began dialysis.

She was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church, where she was a CCD instructor and a member of its rosary society. She was chairman and member of ARCH Diocese Catholic Council for Women (A.C.C.W.).

She was a devoted wife, mother, sister, aunt and friend to her neighbors. She had a heart of gold, endless patience and was an excellent role model to her family.

Surviving are her husband of 60 years, Eugene; 12 children, five daughters, Denise (Jerry) Laufenberg, of Clinton, Iowa, Donna (Rocky) Andracchio, of Winter Haven, Fla., Mary Jeanne (Steve) Bock, of Iowa City, Becky (Rick) Brame, of Des Moines, and Tina (Doug) Hansen, of Lost Nation, Iowa; and seven sons, Louis (Mindy) Bassler, David Bassler and Paul Bassler, all of Dubuque, Bruce (Julie) Bassler and Steve (Tammy) Bassler, both of Maquoketa, Tim (Lori) Bassler, of West Liberty, Iowa, and Bob (Ellen) Bassler, of Davenport, Iowa; 27 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and scores of nieces and nephews; five sisters, Martha Beland, of Stacyville, Dolores VonFeldt, of Austin, Minn., Sister Virginia Meyerhofer, O.S.F., of Sioux City, Iowa, Sister Nona Meyerhofer, O.S.F., of Morton, Miss., and Sister Nila Meyerhofer, O.S.F., of Melrose Park, Ill.; and two brothers, Wilfred "Fritz" (Anna) Meyerhofer, of Osage, Iowa, and Laverne (Mary) Meyerhofer, of Stewardville, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Ambrose, Clem and Marcellus; and a granddaughter, Stacey Hansen.

Memorials are preferred.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to the dedicated and caring staff of Tri-State Dialysis Center, Home Instead and Hospice of Dubuque.
