Mr. Jim L. Stangeland, 58, of 2473 Birchwood Drive, died Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2003, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Peter's Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Dennis Kitchen Funeral Home, 3860 Asbury Road.

Mr. Stangeland worked as a senior merchandising manager for J.C. Penney Co. for 32 years. He transferred to Dubuque from Lincoln, Neb., 15 years ago.

He was born on Feb. 22, 1945, in San Diego, son of Newman and Betty (Davis) Stangeland. He married Kathleen A. Barker on Aug. 2, 1969, in Phoenix, Ariz.

He grew up in Iowa. He graduated from Fort Dodge (Iowa) High School in 1963, and earned his associate degree from Iowa Central Community College, Fort Dodge.

He was a member of the Key City Bassmasters Club and the National Rifle Association. He loved the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He also was an Army veteran, serving from 1967 to 1970.

Surviving are his wife, Kathleen A. Stangeland, of Dubuque; a son, Beau "B.J." (Ruth) Stangeland, of Treynor, Iowa; a daughter, Lindsay Stangeland, of Iowa City; his father, Newman Stangeland, of Manson, Iowa; seven sisters, Patti Myers, of Creston, Iowa, Barb Tuvell, DeVonna Dobson and Shelly Whalen, all of Fort Dodge, Diane (Joe) Medellin and Marty Healing, both of San Antonio, Texas, and Lynn Coleman, of Reno, Nev.; two grandchildren, Kinnick and Carter; and his father-in-law, Joseph Barker, of Phoenix.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Betty Stangeland; and his mother-in-law, Virginia Barker.

A Jim Stangeland Memorial Fund has been established by the family.
