NEW VIENNA, Iowa - Arthur F. Phillips, 79, of New Vienna, died Tuesday, July 22, 2003, surrounded by his family, at Mercy Medical Center-Dyersville, after a brief illness.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Boniface Catholic Church, New Vienna. Burial will be in the church cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7736. Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. today at Kramer Funeral Home, Dyersville, where there will be a parish scripture service at 4 p.m., and a VFW service at 7 p.m.

He was born on July 19, 1924, in Seneca, Kan., son of Joseph and Clara (Vondenkamp) Phillips. He married Dorothy A. Heisler on April 21, 1947, in Dubuque.

Art served his country in the Army from 1945 to 1947. He was a lifetime member of the Edward W. Lake VFW Post 7736, the St. Boniface Holy Name Society and Knights of Columbus Council 1734.

He loved to go fishing and enjoyed the company of his family.

Surviving are his wife, Dorothy; three daughters, Mary Lou Schulte, of Dubuque, and Janet and Diann Phillips, both of Kansas City, Mo.; two sons, Larry (Jan) Phillips, of New Vienna and Loras (Melanie) Phillips, of Dyersville; two brothers, Fr. Walter Phillips, of Ogalala, Neb., and Lyle (Peggy) Phillips, of Kansas City; three sisters, Zita (Melvin) Bergman, of Seneca, and Vera Knudson and Elda Mae (Alvitus) Haverkamp, both of Kansas; seven grandchildren, Sandy and Paula Schulte and Randy (Angie), Ryan, Jason (Jill), Brandi and Robbie Phillips; and three great-grandchildren, Caleb, Carter and Cole Phillips.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a great-granddaughter, Taylor Marie Schulte; two brothers, Regis and Leonard; and a son-in-law, Robert J. Schulte.

In lieu of flowers, an Arthur Phillips Memorial Fund has been established.

The family wishes to express their heartfelt appreciation to the New Vienna Fire Department, Bi-County Ambulance, Doctors Tomas and Miner and the staff at St. Mary's Unit in Dyersville for their wonderful care.
