Karen M. Schlueter, 47, of 605 Woodland Ridge, died at 7:15 p.m. Monday, July 21, 2003, at home, surrounded by her family.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Holy Ghost Catholic Church. Private family burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 3 to 9 p.m. today at Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Westview Funeral Home, 2659 Kennedy Road, where there will be a parish scripture wake service at 7:30 p.m. In lieu of black attire, Karen's request was for a colorful celebration of her life.

Karen was a staff nurse of obstetrics/gynecology at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque until 1995. She assisted in sales and merchandising for Gotta Have It Boutique for the past 10 years.

She was born on Jan. 30, 1956, in Dubuque, daughter of Philip and Thelma (Fleege) Schlueter.

Karen had been a lifelong resident of Dubuque. She graduated from Wahlert High School in 1974, and from Northeast Iowa Community College in 1976, with an associates degree in nursing.

Karen enjoyed music, decorating, gardening, long walks with her sheep dog and the companionship of many friends and family.

Surviving are her mother, Thelma (husband, John Arling) Schlueter, of Dubuque; a brother, Daniel (Lynn) Schlueter, of Dubuque; a sister, Mary Carol (Bob) Cahill, of Naperville, Ill.; a niece, Meghan Cahill, of Naperville; a nephew, Stephen Cahill, of Naperville; a stepbrother, Dave (Gail) Arling, of Cuba City, Wis.; a stepsister, Debra (Gus) Lowery, of Cuba City; and three stepnieces: Stacy Sabers, Jennifer DeMaio and Janell Eichman. Also surviving are aunts and uncles.

She was preceded in death by her father, Philip Schlueter; a brother; Steven Schlueter; and her maternal and paternal grandparents.

Memorials may be given in Karen's name to Hospice of Dubuque and the American Brain Tumor Association, 2720 S. River Road, Suite 146, Des Plaines, Ill. 60018.

Karen's family wishes to extend a special thank-you to Dr. Tom Lally and the staff at the Wendt Center; Dr. Kirk Payne and staff at Medical Associates; Hospice of Dubuque; and Karen's many friends for their loving and compassionate care.
