Deceased Name: Bernard J. Dietzel

Bernard J. Dietzel, 80, of East Dubuque, died at 10:20 p.m. Friday, March 26, 2010, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque. Services were held Tuesday, March 30, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, East Dubuque, with the Rev. Michael Barry officiating. Burial was in the East Dubuque Cemetery, where military rites were accorded by members of East Dubuque American Legion Post 787.

He was born on Dec. 13, 1929, in Dubuque, son of Cornelius and Louisa (Vondran) Dietzel. He married Rita M. Middendorf on Oct. 14, 1952, at Nativity BVM Church, Menominee; she preceded him in death on Nov. 20, 2009.

Bernard and Rita farmed near East Dubuque. Bernard was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict, serving from 1952 to 1954, having been stationed in Austria and Germany. He was a member of St. Mary's Parish and its Holy Name Society and a 53-year member of American Legion Post 787 of East Dubuque, having served as past commander. He also was a charter member and former chief of the Menominee-Dunleith Fire Department, a member of the Jo Daviess County Board from 1988 to 1992, and a former trustee and election judge for Dunleith Township.

Surviving are three daughters, Diane (Kevin) Torrey, of Dubuque, Shirley (Dave) Horstman, of East Dubuque, and Jeanne (John) Kringle, of Zwingle, Iowa; a son, Bob (Carol) Dietzel, of East Dubuque; Seven grandchildren, Jonathon (Abby), Michael and Kristin Torrey, Cassandra and Kayla Horstman, and Nicholas and Andrew Kringle; a great-grandson, Kasey Torrey; a sister-in-law, Rosalinda Wubben, of Scales Mound; two brothers-in-law, Walter (Marceline) Middendorf and Tony (Jane) Middendorf, both of Menominee; and many nieces and nephews.

He also was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Wilbert Dietzel.
