Eugenia "Genie" (Riedl) Sheehan, 76, of Mission, Kan., formerly of Dubuque, passed away Tuesday, July 1, 2003, at home, with family at her side.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Pius X Church, 5500 Woodson, Mission, where friends may call from 9 to 10:45 a.m. Saturday. Genie donated her body to the University of Kansas Medical Center. Burial of the cremated remains will be at a later date in the family plot in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Dubuque. The McGilley Hoge Chapel, Overland Park, Kan., is in charge of arrangements.

She was born on Aug. 8, 1926, in Dubuque, daughter of Christian and Josephine (Koetz) Riedl. She was a graduate of the Mercy School of Nursing in Dubuque.

She was a member of St. Pius X Church, Mission, since 1961, and the St. Bernadette Circle. She also was a member of the Johnson County Arts & Crafts Council and active in the Stroke Support Groups of the Metro Kansas City Area.

Genie leaves a legacy of perseverance and determination in overcoming the devastating effects of a stroke in 1978. Due to stroke-related paralysis, she transferred her painting and craftwork to her left hand to the amazement of her friends and family. She was determined to live her life to the fullest.

Surviving are her husband, Cletus, at home; a son, Paul (Joyce), of Lenexa, Kan.; a daughter, Mary Sheehan, of Quinton, Va.; six grandchildren, Christy, Amy and Stephen Sheehan, all of Lenexa, and Michael, Ryan and Sean Green, all of Fredericksburg, Va.; and a great-granddaughter, Paige Sheehan.

She was preceded in death by her infant daughter, Catherine Ann; her parents; a sister, Marie Beringer; and brothers, Carl, Richard, Don and Ralph.

Memorials may be given to St. Pius X Church, 5601 Woodson, Mission, KS 66202, The American Heart Association, 6800 W. 93rd, Overland Park, KS 66212 and Odyssey Healthcare, 9229 Ward Parkway, Kansas City, MO 64114.

The family wishes to extend our gratitude for the professional and compassionate care by the staff of Odyssey Healthcare, the caring support of the members of St. Bernadette Circle, the Knights of Columbus Council 843, and our many friends and family.
