George B. Kutsch

George B. Kutsch, 89, of 1895 Churchill Drive, died Sunday, April 3, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center-Dubuque.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 8, at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Steven Rosonke officiating and the Rev. Eugene Kutsch as homilist. Entombment will be in Resurrection Garden Mausoleum, Mount Calvary Cemetery, where military rites will be accorded by the American Legion Dubuque Post 6. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, April 7, at Hoffmann-Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 3860 Asbury Road, where there will be a prayer service at 7:30 p.m.

He was born on June 8, 1921, son of George M. and Ella (Berg) Kutsch. George graduated from Loras Academy in 1939. He married Marjorie Strub on Oct. 3, 1945, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

George served in the Army for three years, with overseas service in both France and Germany. He was discharged with the rank of sergeant major in 1946. In 1948, he enlisted in the Army Reserves with the 389th Engineer Battalion and in 1951, was appointed a warrant officer. This was one of the first warrant officer appointments in the entire Iowa Military District in the ranks of the organized Reserves. He retired in 1965 as chief warrant officer W-3. George enjoyed visiting with his fellow retired officers at their monthly breakfast get-togethers.

George worked for the Morrison Bros. Co. for 40 years and retired in 1986 as plant superintendent. He served on the board of directors for Morrison Bros. Co. for 35 years.

For many years, George enjoyed mall walking, having a cup of coffee and lively conversation with his friends at the mall. He was an avid sports fan with his favorite teams being the Chicago Cubs and the Chicago Bears.

He was a member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church and was a past member of the Parish Council, having served as president and also as a lector for many years. George volunteered for the parish, and for 20 years, he counted the Sunday collection. He also did volunteer work at Mercy Medical Center. George was a life member of Council 510 Knights of Columbus and a member of the American Legion Dubuque Post 6. He was a member of the Dubuque Serra Club for 37 years having served as secretary, program chairman and president during his years with the club. George served as treasurer of the Morrison Employees Credit Union for 45 years and then as chairman for another 12 years.

Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Marjorie; four children, Patricia (Michael) Chalder, of San Clemente, Calif., Kathy Miller, of Wildomar, Calif., Michael (Bronwyn) Kutsch, of Austin, Texas, and Janet (Michael) Hilby, of Cedar Falls, Iowa; grandchildren, Christine (Kim) Albizati, Jeff (Jennifer) Stone, Brandon (Lisa) Kutsch, Amanda Kutsch, Katrina Kutsch, Tim (Danielle) Hilby, Liz Hilby, Laura Hilby and Ryan Hilby; great-grandchildren, Taylor, Elizabeth and Andrew Albizati, Andrue, Alex and Sean Stone and Joshua Kutsch; two sisters, Ethel Spautz, of Wilmington, Del., and Ruth (Jerome) Urbain, of Epworth, Iowa; and a brother, Eldon Kutsch, of Dubuque.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Robert, who was killed in action in World War II; and two sisters, Jeanette Heitzman and Rose Kueter.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. Anthony's Parish.
