Lesley (Lagen) Hayes

Lesley Ann Hayes, 60, of Dubuque, died Sunday, April 3, 2011, at home.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 7, at Hoffmann Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 3860 Asbury Road, with Chaplain Dave Pacholke officiating. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 6, at the funeral home.

Lesley was the daughter of John and Colette (Trausch) Lagen. She graduated from Wahlert High School in 1969 and Patricia Stevens Finishing School, with a degree in fashion merchandising, in 1971.

She married Dennis Hayes on March 2, 1973, in Dubuque.

Lesley supervised a household consisting of two children, a husband, multiple dogs, birds, fish and a variety of plants.

She was a longtime active member of the Lupus Foundation and was an advocate and leader in educating the community on this very difficult disease.

Lesley was an amazing mother, wife and companion. Through all her many physical adversities, she maintained a great attitude and always was quick to say thank-you and respond with a positive comment. Her strong faith in God sustained her through many ordeals. She was very much loved by her family and friends.

Surviving are her loving and supportive husband, Dennis Hayes, of Dubuque; her special sons, Justin (Angie) Hayes and Jared Hayes, both of Denver; her mother, Colette Lagen, of Dubuque; her four siblings, Chris (Joan) Lagen, of Dubuque, Lisa (Jim) Murphy, of Madison, Wis., Laura (Tom) Christensen, of Waterloo, Iowa, and Steve (Deb) Lagen, of International Falls, Minn.; nieces and nephews, Ryan Murphy, Bailey Murphy, Louis Christensen, Sarah Christensen, Ariel Lagen, Nick Lagen and Lauren Schlueter; her parents-in-law, John and Ruth Hayes, of Dubuque; three sisters-in-law, Sue (Dan) Renfrow, of Des Moines, Debbie (Kevin) Brady, of Denver, and Kim (David) Hayes-Hoefer, of Seattle; nieces and nephews-in-law, Sasha (Mel) Krizer, Ashley (Mike) Carruthers, Kara Renfrow, Lauren Brady, Ben Brady, Zach Hoefer and Matt Hoefer; and her Yorkie Terrier, Fugi.

She was preceded in death by her father, John Lagen.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Lupus Foundation of America.

The family would like to thank the doctors at Dubuque Family Practice and Jayne, Dr. Niemer and Lois, Dr. Viner, Hospice of Dubuque, the nurses and staff at The Finley Hospital, the Wound Center staff at Finley and the nurses at Finley Home Health Care. Also, special appreciation to Kim Hayes, her sister-in-law, for the exceptional care and understanding provided during her last days. The family also very much appreciates all the support, understanding and words of encouragement from her many friends.
