ASBURY, Iowa - Mrs. Adam R. (Betty J.) Podnar, 51, of 16711 Clover Lane, rural Asbury, died at 1 a.m. Tuesday, June 17, 2003, at home. Graveside services and burial will be at 4 p.m. Friday at the Asbury (Iowa) Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. Friday at Dennis Kitchen Funeral Home, 3860 Asbury Road.

Mrs. Podnar had formerly worked at Heritage Manor and Luther Manor Nursing Homes as a nurse's aide prior to retiring. After that, she did light housekeeping on an occasional basis.

She was born on Oct. 18, 1951, in Rockford, Ill., daughter of LaVerne and Irene (Colson) Hartley. She married Adam R. Podnar on May 3, 1968, near Waterloo.

She loved her flowers, gardening and being able to live at her home in the country where she loved to play with her cats. She also dearly loved her grandchildren, and in her spare time, loved to cook and bake.

Surviving are her husband, Adam R. Podnar; three sons, Alexander (Jamie) Podnar, of Dubuque, Adam Podnar III, of Cedar Rapids, and Anthony Podnar, of Asbury; three grandchildren, Shiloh, Brennen and Hunter; five sisters, Patricia Lytle, of Seattle, Georgia Wood, of Olathe, Kan., Eulha Hartley and Mildred (Joseph) McColley, both of Savanna, Ill., and Shirley Casey, of Kearney, Mo.; a brother, Paul (Teresa) Hartley, of Savanna; and her father, LaVerne Hartley, of Savanna. She was preceded in death by her mother; and a brother, Charles Hartley.

A Betty Jean Podnar Memorial Fund has been established by her family.
