The Rev. James Goedken, 62, of Waterloo, Iowa, formerly of Monticello, and Dubuque, died of pancreatic cancer Tuesday, June 3, 2003, at Queen of Peace-St. Mary's Rectory.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, St. Joseph's Worship Center. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Friday in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Monticello, Iowa. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the church, where there will be a vigil service at 7 p.m. Friends also may call after 10 a.m. Friday at the church.

He was born on June 10, 1940, in Monticello, son of Cletus M. and Edith E. (Miller) Goedken.

He attended grade school at St. Joseph's, Prairieburg, through 1954, and high school at Sacred Heart, Monticello, graduating in 1958. He received his bachelor of arts degree from Loras College, Dubuque, in 1962. He then entered Mount St. Bernard Seminary, Dubuque, where he received his master's degree in theology.

He received his master's in religious education in 1975, from Seattle (Wash.) University.

He was ordained on June 4, 1966, in Dubuque. The parishes he served were: St. Mary's, New Hampton, Iowa; St. Raphael's Cathedral, Dubuque; Immaculate Conception, Charles City, Iowa; Immaculate Conception, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; St. Pius X, Cedar Rapids; St. John's, Placid, rural Epworth, Iowa; Sacred Heart, Oelwein; and St. Joseph's, Key West, Iowa. He had recently been pastor of Queen of Peace Parish.

He taught high school at LaSalle and Regis, both in Cedar Rapids; and at Beckman High School, Dyersville, Iowa.

Surviving are three brothers, Bernard (Janice), of Cedar Rapids, Clarence (Rae Ann), of Monticello, and Paul (Rita), of Grinnell, Iowa; four sisters, Alice Baker, of Minneapolis, Sister Laura, OP, of Monterrey, Calif., Dorothy (Harold) Schumann, of South English, Judy (Ronald) Grob, of Cascade, Iowa; 23 nieces and nephews; and many great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant sister, Rose Mary; and a nephew, James Baker Jr.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Cedar Valley Consolidated Catholic School, Waterloo.
