Dennis W. "Denny" Ansel, 54, of 420 Valeria St., died at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, May 24, 2003, at The Finley Hospital, Dubuque, surrounded by his family, after a long, courageous battle with lung cancer.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Leonard Funeral Home & Crematory, 2595 Rockdale Road, where friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Key West, Iowa.

Mr. Ansel owned and operated Ansel Auto Service and Towing for many years.

He was born on Nov. 21, 1948, in Dubuque, son of Charles and Ruby (Oldner) Ansel. He married Betty Jean Cornwell on Feb. 4, 1967, at St. Mary's Catholic Church.

He was a veteran race car driver and drove No. 80 at many tracks in the tri-state area since 1964. He was an avid NASCAR fan, especially Ernhardt Racing.

He served on the Dubuque County Fair Board for three years and was inducted into the Dubuque County Fairgrounds Speedway Hall of Fame in 1999.

Surviving are his wife, Betty; four daughters, Peggy (Doug) Ohmert, Brenda (Mark C.) Sullivan, Kathy (fianc, Edward Clancy) Ansel and Lori (J.J.) Miller, all of Dubuque; seven grandchildren, Brandi, Krista, Allan, Steve, Gerald "Bubba," Thomas and Morgan; two sisters, Sheila Sharkey (Norm) Dorst and Nancy Leslein, both of Dubuque; and three brothers, Mike (Linda) Ansel and Kevin (Kris) Ansel, both of Dubuque, and Steve (Carol) Ansel, of Colorado.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

In lieu of flowers, a Dennis W. "Denny" Ansel Memorial Fund has been established.
